Serco preferred bidder for Australia’s largest prison

Serco Group has been named preferred bidder to operate the New Grafton Correctional Centre (NGCC) in New South Wales, Australia.

The international service company is part of the NorthernPathways consortium which will design, build and operate NGCC in a Public Private Partnership for the NSW Government.

The consortium also operates correctional facilities in Queensland, Western Australia, New Zealand and the UK.

Construction of the facility will begin this year with expected completion in 2020 when Serco’s contract for operation will commence.

It is estimated that the total contract value to Serco over a 20-year term is approximately A$2.6 billion (approximately £1.6 billion).

Once completed, NGCC will have beds for a total of 1,700 men, women and minimum security inmates and will be the largest correctional facility in Australia.

The consortium will now enter into final contract negotiations.
