BIFM sets out its strategic priorities for the Government

Following last week’s General Election the British Institute of Facilities Management (BIFM) has set out its strategic priorities for the facilities management (FM) sector in its first position paper for the Government.

Accounting for about seven per cent of UK GDP, the health of the wider FM industry has a major impact on the overall UK economy, with the professional body outlining its three priorities in its BIFM Priorities paper as a Government is looking to be formed to face the challenges of the next few years.

BIFM is calling on the Government to:

  • Ensure that the FM industry does not lose access to its current and future workforce;
  • Work in partnership with the profession to invest in people and skills; and
  • Work with industry and business to develop the industrial strategy that delivers increased productivity in the UK workplace.

BIFM Acting Chief Executive, Linda Hausmanis, said: “With the formation of the new Government ongoing, now more than ever is the time to remind those tasked with leading our country about the economic importance of the FM industry and the role it plays.

“One of the key driving forces for market growth in the UK has been the continued trend for companies to out-source non-core activities. In line with this, the FM market has continued to grow, even during the recession, and there remains considerable scope for FM to continue to diversify into other services.

“Because of the economic reach of the industry across different sectors, the FM sector can play a decisive role in delivering Government objectives, from climate change targets to Apprenticeships, in addition to increasing overall UK productivity through the delivery of effective workplaces, potentially delivering up to a £20 billion uplift to the UK economy as evidenced in The Workplace Advantage report by The Stoddart Review, of which BIFM is a founding partner.”

The publication of the BIFM Priorities paper follows the recent appointment of a new senior policy advisor as part of BIFM’s strategic ambition to be the authoritative voice of the FM profession.

Hausmanis continued: “This important appointment is a key step forward in continuing to establish BIFM as the authoritative voice of FM, enabling the Institute to speak up on matters of importance to the sector and the members we represent.

“As the new Government takes shape, the General Election has presented an opportunity for BIFM to start raising our voice among MPs, civil servants and other stakeholders with the aim of influencing future policy and legislation to support a thriving FM industry, which in turn will benefit wider society.”
