Ethical FM: RICS & FMJ breakfast seminar

One of the most shocking revelations of the Carillion debacle was that it was not an isolated anomaly. It soon appeared that many of its competitors may have taken on too much risk, making decisions that have left them with decidedly shaky financials. A common thread is that a good proportion of their business was, and still is, large public-sector contracts.

In a breakfast seminar event taking place at the RICS HQ in the heart of Westminster on 31 May, RICS & FMJ will be aiming to address these issues.

During the session chaired by Rory Murphy FRICS a member of the RICS FM committee and Commercial Director, Vinci Facilities, we’ll hear from FM sector leaders who’ll discuss why the market has been failing, and how we can find a solution.

He’ll be joined by Deborah Rowland FRICS, Director – Public Sector Affairs, Sodexo who has extensive knowledge of Government contracts who comments: “The way that Government contracts FM is commodity driven. FM is not a commodity, it is a service. When you commoditise something, it drives a behaviour of price cutting.”

Paul Bagust, Global Property Standards Director, RICS will introduce the event when he will update delegates on a new RICS model they are developing. He explains: “This is a framework that is fairer, more collaborative and more transparent. A model that all FM professionals are expected to follow. To this end we are drafting new procurement standards that promote best practice.”

Arrival and registration will start at 8.30am, with the talks commencing from around 9am.  Once the talks have finished there will be more opportunities for refreshments and networking.

Breakfast and refreshments will be supplied by FSI and FreshGround, who are sponsoring the event.
