Family Business Apprentice of the Year winner

The Family Business of the Year Awards (‘FBOTY’) are a real highlight in the family business calendar, organised by Family Business United and now in their sixth year, marking the contribution that family firms make in the UK. In addition to the recognition given to some amazing family firms there was also an appreciation of the people who work for family businesses, especially those starting their careers as apprentices.

For many family firms, apprentices are a vital element in creating the next generation of skilled people and future management. This was a strong category with some great apprentices showcasing the diversity of apprenticeships in today’s workplace, including three promising candidates from Bagnalls.

The winner was determined by a panel of experienced judges looking for a range of qualities including dedication, an aptitude for learning and pride in working for a family business. Adam Knowles from the Ellesmere Port branch of Bagnalls was deemed to meet all the criterion and was crowned Family Business Apprentice of the Year.

Stephen Bagnall, Managing Director of Bagnalls said “We are so proud of our apprenticeship scheme and especially the three strong candidates we put forward for this year’s competition. Adam, Ryan and Ellie have all proven themselves to be excellent apprentices during their time with Bagnalls. Adam, in particular, has demonstrated a willingness to learn, ask questions and always has a can-do attitude, character traits which we hope will develop throughout his career with the company. We believe he has all the qualities required to be a success within the painting and decorating industry.”

Paul Andrews, Founder of Family Business United and creator of the national awards, concluded by saying “Adam was a worthy winner demonstrating a clear commitment to his apprenticeship, already gaining national recognition for his painting and decorating skills and he is dedicated and detailed in his approach to his job. He clearly impresses his management team and colleagues with clear leadership skills already coming to the fore. Described by his bosses as ‘extra special’ and recognised by colleagues as ‘outstanding,’ Adam has solid qualities that will stand him in good stead as his career continues.

“Adam deserves all the accolades that come with this award and is great ambassador and role model for a great family business too.”
