TRENDS AND
TECHNOLOGIES
Miguel Aguado, Marketing and Technology Manager at
Lutron EA with some suggestions to get you up to speed on
the latest trends and technologies at this year’s Facilities
Show.
• Wireless products: Wireless systems have been coming
into their own in recent years, with simple-to-use planning
software and reliable technology. They offer tremendous
flexibility: You can start with a single space and then expand
to a floor, or even an entire building, as your needs change.
They’re also much simpler to install than wired systems.
• Full building control: Lighting is not just about overhead
fixtures and localised task lamps. It is a complex
combination of luminaires, sensors, LED drivers, personal
remotes, and window blinds – and needs to be managed in
conjunction with HVAC systems and other building utilities
with seamless integration.
• Automated blinds: With so much amazing electric lighting
technology, the seemingly old-fashioned merits of blinds
are often ignored. But blinds are a key component of
lighting control. Lighting a space with daylight helps save
energy and reduce dependence on electric lighting. Blinds
not only help regulate daylight, they are imperative to
sustainability standards and the design of green buildings.
• Managing smart buildings: Today’s connected lighting
controls and management tools – part of the Internet of
Things – help optimise building operations and improve
business productivity for facilities managers and FM
services providers. These tools include intuitive interfaces
like Lutron’s Enterprise Vue software, which allow you to
navigate through a visual floor plan of your estate — from
a single fixture, to a room, a floor or a building— to view
status, get alerts, monitor lighting and blind performance,
and make quick adjustments from the web-based interface.
• Human centric lighting: Smart lighting control can
significantly decrease lighting energy use and optimise
building operations, but the greatest value integrated
lighting systems can add for the owner, tenant, and
manager is to enhance comfort and employee productivity.
Human centric lighting design solutions, including ones
that promote quality light, natural light, connection to the
outdoors, and personalised and adaptive controls, can
help promote comfort, enable enhanced wellbeing, and
help foster engagement and promote staff productivity.
They can help workplaces retain and attract employees.
They can help hotels make their rooms and public spaces
more welcoming. In general, human centric lighting
creates extraordinary human experiences that can benefit
organisations in ways that pay dividends – both now and
into the future.
The attractions of the Facilities Show lead the way to those
future spaces. With the innovations on display, a brighter
tomorrow should be at hand.
