Players met with challenging conditions in the Safety, Health & FM Golf Day

The immaculate Centurion Club in St Albans hosted over 50 golfers for the southern arm of the Health, Safety & FM Golf Championships presented by Shirley Parsons & the Facilities Show, and in association with SHP Online, FMJ, and Safety & Health Expo.

The event, sponsored by THSP Risk Management and organised by Will Roebuck Golf, was played in torrid conditions with players having to battle the cold and torrential rain during the round.

John Balague from GFG Gas Detection was crowned the winner, with a very creditable 38 stableford points. Playing off a handicap of three, Balague even bogied his final hole on his way to victory.

That meant a very slender one-point advantage from Tony Allen, who scored 37 points from a handicap of 14.

The team event was won by a quartet from PRS Jobs who scored a combined 83 points, handing them a narrow one-point victory over a team from Shirley Parsons.

The team from SHP and Safety & Health Expo came in eighth, with a score of 74.

Jack Yarrow, from Grundon Waste Management, secured the nearest to the pin prize with a wonderful shot to within just a few feet of the hole on the tricky 159-yard par 3 fifth hole.

The longest drive was on the flagship 18th hole, where a beautiful strike from Elmstone’s Joanne Price was victorious.

Widely regarded as one of the best new courses in the UK, Centurion Club has been open for play since 2013 and is located on the west side of St Albans. Despite the treacherous weather, the course was in immaculate condition.

A quick mid-round gin, supplied by Jim and Tonic, certainly made the conditions a little more bearable and a club cleaning service sponsored by THSP Risk Management was certainly appreciated before, and especially after, the round.

Both the winning team and the runners-up will be continuing their rivalry with a virtual golf challenge at June’s Facilities Show. If you’re coming along to the show, pop along to Stand FM6630 to challenge them yourselves.

If you prefer the great outdoors, then September’s northern event may be more your thing.

It will be taking place at Notts Golf Club in Hollinwell, ranked as the 36th best course in the UK and the venue for final qualifying for The Open Championship for the next four years, on 11 September 2019.
