Wates Smartspace FM awarded HMRC deal

Wates Smartspace FM, part of the Wates Group, has been appointed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to support its estates transformation programme.

The five-year contract will see Wates providing hard FM services; planned, and reactive maintenance across HMRC’s South Area portfolio which stretches from Cardiff to Kent and includes central London. Wates will also deliver statutory compliance management through its in-house, bespoke Assurance Compliance Tool (ACT).

HMRC’s estates transformation strategy aims to modernise the government estate. It will maximise how the government uses its assets and helping to transform the Civil Service into a modern employer that runs an efficient and sustainable government estate with fit-for-purpose office space and modern working environments.

The South Area portfolio covers the entire South of England encompassing both new-build and legacy properties. It also includes HMRC’s regional centre in Bristol, 3 Glass Wharf, built by Wates Construction, which will provide HMRC with the digital infrastructure and high-specification office space required by a modern digitally advanced tax authority.

James Gregg, Managing Director, Wates Smartspace FM, said: “I’m extremely pleased that HMRC and Wates Smartspace FM are about to embark on this large-scale contract. From the moment we engaged with HMRC it was clear that they were looking to disrupt the norm. In this spirit we are delighted to be able to bring best practice from the private sector into the public sector. HMRC gave us every opportunity to challenge as well as listen throughout the highly competitive bid process.

“This is the beginning of a long-term partnership and I look forward to Wates collaborating with HMRC for many years to come.”

Around 30 roles will be created under the contract, with many going to new recruits and apprentices.
