Mitie is the largest facilities management employer to be awarded five stars by the British Safety Council across all its operations, following an in-depth examination under British Safety Council’s 2025 specification, which scores on the maturity of the health and safety management systems in place.
The comprehensive and robust audit included documentation reviews, interviews with senior management, colleagues and stakeholders, and observing operations across Mitie sites in sectors including defence systems, aviation, waste management, healthcare, retail and security. The audit was then measured against key health and safety management best practice indicators including leadership and commitment, stakeholder engagement, risk management, organisational Occupational Health and Safety culture, and continual improvement.
The British Safety Council’s Occupational Health and Safety audit, found that Mitie cultivates a strong and progressive culture around health and safety, supported by committed leadership, consistent training and communication channels through its Live Safe programme, and data-driven systems to monitor and evaluate safety procedures. Ranking as “excellent”, the report outlined how Mitie promotes transparency through colleague involvement and feedback pathways.
Key findings from the audit include:
- High workplace standards: Sites were found to be clean, well-managed, and compliant with workplace welfare, food safety protocols, and regulatory requirements. Mitie also fosters a positive reporting culture for hazards alongside structured governance forums
- Clear Health and Wellbeing strategy: Colleague health and wellbeing is supported by effective policies around workplace pressure, financial wellbeing support, and targeted resources for neurodiverse colleagues, helping to boost workplace resilience
