Competition launches to celebrate the unsung heroes of estates and facilities

To celebrate exceptional individuals and teams that stand out in Healthcare Estates and Facilities (E&F) departments across the UK, meals provider, apetito has launched its nationwide competition for 2026 that allows hospitals to nominate their unsung E&F heroes.

Whether it’s the teams working outside to maintain the grounds and gardens, those keeping the buildings safe and secure, caterers preparing nutritious meals daily, or the hands ensuring a clean and tidy ward environment – the competition looks to recognise the essential work they do to ensure excellent patient care.

To say “thank you” for all that they do, individuals and teams can be nominated for one of the following six categories to be in with a chance of winning a luxury hamper:

  1. Making a Real Difference – Recognising a remarkable member of the team who always goes above and beyond to create a positive impact. The winning individual will have exceeded the expectations of their role and demonstrate exceptional dedication to enhance the patient experience.
  2. Leading The Way in Sustainability – This category honours an individual or team which exemplifies sustainable practice and champions sustainable initiatives across their site(s). Their effort and dedication significantly contributes to carbon reduction targets and the NHS’ ambition of reaching Net Zero by 2040.
  3. Catering Champion – Celebrating an outstanding member of the catering team who has improved inpatient catering operations, food quality and/or the overall mealtime experience, helping to enhance the wellbeing of patients.
  4. Community Impact Award – This category recognises a member of the E&F team who consistently goes above and beyond to support their local community. Whether its volunteering their time, charitable fundraising or using their skills to help others – they show an unwavering commitment to giving back.
  5. Rising Star – For an emerging talent within E&F who is at the early stage of their career, having joined the sector within the past two years. This category celebrates an individual demonstrating significant development and showcasing exceptional potential for the future.
  6. Team of the Year – This category celebrates the outstanding achievements of three regional E&F teams across England, Wales and Scotland that have evidenced excellent collaboration and synergy. These teams have helped drive success and efficiency for their Healthcare facility and created a positive impact on both colleagues and patients

Nominations are open until Friday 10 April where the winning heroes will then be chosen by an independent judging panel and celebrated on National Healthcare Estates and Facilities Day on Wednesday 17 June.
