Lucy Jeynes appointed first female chair of governors at South & City College Birmingham

Lucy Jeynes, a respected figure in the facilities management sector and founding Director of Leamington-based Larch Consulting, has been appointed Chair of Governors at South & City College Birmingham (SCCB).

Over a 35-year FM career, Jeynes has advised major organisations on aligning workplace, people, and business goals. That experience in strategic leadership and operational improvement will be central to SCCB’s continued growth and collaboration with industry.

The announcement comes at a pivotal time for SCCB, recently named the most improved FE college in the country and celebrating its best exam results in a decade.

Commenting on her appointment, Jeynes said: “I first became involved with the college because I am passionate about the opportunities that education and skills bring to people of all ages and backgrounds. SCCB plays a vital role in Birmingham’s business and community landscape – not least of all the FM and built environment sectorsand offers each learner a place to flourish.

“Businesses across the FM sector offer  a significant number of apprenticeship roles, yet it is often an overlooked industry by young people. I’d like to change that.”

Principal Mike Hopkins MBE welcomed Lucy’s appointment, he said: “Our mission is to bring real-world skills to every learner. Lucy’s deep understanding of the FM industry and its leadership challenges, combined with her business acumen and long-standing commitment to SCCB, will be invaluable. Under her guidance, the board will continue to strengthen its role in shaping the region’s skills landscape.”

The strengthened board takes office as responsibility for the national skills agenda moves to the Department for Work and Pensions – a change that places even greater emphasis on collaboration between education and industry.

Jeynes added: “Facilities management and the wider built environment sector are critical to the UK’s productivity and sustainability ambitions. Colleges like SCCB are where the next generation of technical and professional talent begins that journey.

“We have an essential role in advocating for the skills, funding, and partnerships that will sustain that pipeline, and with a fantastic board beside me, I’m confident we can deliver lasting change.”

Workspace management: One-size-fits-all booking systems don’t work anymore

The way we work has changed – yet, many organisations are still relying on rigid, one-size-fits-all tools to manage desks and meeting rooms, according to a new study from workplace management solutions provider, Matrix Booking.

Spreadsheets, calendars, and generic booking software may have worked once, but they’re struggling to keep pace with today’s flexible, hybrid workforce. The result? Wasted time, frustrated employees, and expensive underutilised space.

Matrix Booking’s new study, ‘One-size-fits-all booking systems don’t work for today’s workforce’, explores why current systems are falling short – and how organisations can reimagine workspace management to boost efficiency, employee experience, and cost savings.
