The Last Straw: single
use plastic in the built
environment seminar
With over 8 million tons of rubbish
entering the world’s oceans each
year, it is predicted that by 2050
there will be a heavier weight of
plastic in the oceans than fi sh
“FM has a huge role to play
in breaking this cycle of plastic
use and must take the lead in
ensuring that innovative solutions
are created to enable businesses
to eliminate their reliance and
use of single-use plastic,” says
Paul Bagust, RICS Global Property
Standards Director and IFMA UK
Director. “We are calling on the
industry to further demonstrate
the strategic value it has for many
years claimed it provides. This
may be the opportunity for our
profession to showcase its role to
business and governments around
the world.”
IFMA UK’s philanthropic event
on the evening of Tuesday 16th
April will feature debates and
guest speakers outside of the
built environment, including
Will McCallum, Head of Oceans
at Greenpeace and author of How
to Give Up Plastic: A Guide to
Changing the World, One Plastic
Bottle at a Time, and Amy and Ella
Meek, aged 15 and 13, the founders
of Kids Against Plastic!

BCC INCLUDES FM IN LATEST
INDUSTRY RESEARCH
The British Cleaning Council (BCC) has published its
most comprehensive research into the UK’s cleaning
industry, and for the first time has also broadened the
scope of its research to include data from across the
cleaning, waste management, landscaping and FM
sectors.
Combined
the BCC has
calculated that
these industries
contributed £49.9
billion to the
economy in 2016,
while the number of employees totalled 914,000.
The report further reveals that between 2010 and 2018 there
has been a 38 per cent increase in the number of companies
involved in cleaning, waste, FM and landscaping services,
rising from 45,970 to 63,490.
With the potential impact of Brexit still uncertain, the BCC’s
research also highlights that while 19 per cent of employees
working across the four sectors are foreign born, this rises to
28 per cent within commercial cleaning.
Other key metrics linked to the cleaning, waste
management, landscaping and FM sectors include:
Between 2010 and 2018, the combined turnover within the
four sectors rose by 34 per cent – over twice as much as the
UK average.
Within the four sectors, 88 per cent of businesses employ
less than 10 people.
Twenty-nine per cent of all vacancies within the four
sectors were described as ‘hard to fill’.
With a predicted growth rate of nine per cent over the next
five years the four sectors are set to generate 93,000 jobs
by 2024.
With older people leaving the industry, a further 436,000
vacancies are set to be created through ‘replacement
demand’.
FACILITIES SHOW UNVEILS SPEAKER LINE-UP
Facilities Show has announced the three
inspirational keynote at this year’s event, taking
place on 18-20 June at ExCeL London.
The event will host presentations from a rugby
legend, a sporting icon and an expert reporter, whose
diverse experiences can provide key lessons for
facilities management professionals. The speeches
will take place across all three days of the event.
The first speaker is reporter and journalist Steph
McGovern, who will discuss how she went from
working as an apprentice engineer at Black & Decker
in Durham to becoming an award-winning financial
journalist and BBC household name. In her business
reporting she speaks with factory workers and CEOs
alike – her knowledge and experience will be on full
display during her speech.
The second inspirational speaker is Michael
Edwards, better known as Eddie the Eagle,
whose heroic underdog e orts in the ski jumping
competition at the 1988 Winter Olympics have
earned him a place in British sporting legend.
While Eddie’s speech focuses on risk and safety, his
perseverance, courage and hard-work in the face of
insurmountable odds will provide a universal lesson.
The line-up is completed by England rugby hero
Jonny Wilkinson, who famously helped his country to
a World Cup title in 2003. Wilkinson will share stories
and lessons from his long and successful professional
career, and how he has grappled with his mental
health struggles in a male-dominated industry,
making this essential viewing, particularly as FM
adapts to an increased focus on workplace wellbeing.
