Forest Green Rovers, the world’s greenest football club, has partnered with plant-based compostable food packaging business, Vegware, and Grundon Waste Management, to transform matchday packaging into a closed-loop composting system.
Introduced this month, fans at Forest Green Rovers are now enjoying their food and drink in Vegware’s award-winning plant-based packaging. Vegware’s in-house waste consultancy team and Grundon’s waste experts are working hand-in-hand with the club to install clear, effective bin systems, ensuring packaging is captured, composted, and returned to the soil.
The initiative builds on Forest Green Rovers’ reputation as a trailblazer in sustainable sport, recognised by the United Nations and FIFA. By combining compostable packaging with expert waste consultancy and end-to-end waste services, the partnership provides a practical example of how football clubs can reduce their environmental impact.
This new system will be in place throughout the season, with fans seeing Vegware packaging at The New Lawn stadium supported by simple signage and bin systems designed to make composting second nature.
Eilidh O’Connor, Head of Environmental at Vegware, said: “Forest Green Rovers share our vision for a world where sustainability is part of everyday choices. By combining our compostable packaging with our consultancy expertise, and working closely with Grundon, we can help the club build on their brilliant track record and make it even easier for fans and staff to do the right thing. Together, we’re proving that sport can be a powerful platform for sustainable change.”
Stephen Hill, General Manager – Group Commercial Development at Grundon, said: “Sustainability is at the core of our business, so to be able to share our expertise and see what a difference this is making as the new football season gets under way, is a winner for us. Compostable packaging combined with specialist collection services we can provide is literally a game-changer for both Forest Green Rovers and the wider sporting community, and has huge potential for the future.”
