UK circular economy furniture business saves over 111,000 kg CO2e in first half of 2025

UK circular economy specialist in the workplace furniture sector, Recycle Scotland, has announced that projects completed in the first six months of 2025 have saved over 111,000 kg CO2e, demonstrating the substantial environmental benefits of keeping workplace furniture in the circular economy rather than sending it to landfill.

The 15-year-old business, based in Scotland and operating across the UK, has achieved these environmental savings through its comprehensive approach to managing the lifecycle of workplace furniture. Between January and June of this year, the business successfully rehomed or recycled 4,121 pieces of furniture weighing a total of 93,000 kg, resulting in carbon savings of 111,875 kg CO2e.

The company provides a circular approach to workplace furniture: uplifting unwanted items from businesses, refurbishing pieces through reupholstery and re-engineering, and finding new homes for products through resale or responsible recycling when reuse isn’t viable.

Drew Carmichael, Director of Recycle Scotland said: “These results demonstrate the immense value in delivering both environmental and operational benefits to our clients. While businesses are increasingly focused on meeting their sustainability goals and reducing their carbon footprint, they’re also looking for cost-efficient solutions that make economic sense. Our approach delivers on both fronts – companies can significantly reduce their environmental impact while benefiting from cost-effective furniture disposal and procurement alternatives.”

The carbon savings calculations are based on estimations aligned with the industry-standard FIRA Study ‘Benchmarking Carbon Footprints of Furniture Products Feasibility Study’ from 2011, providing clients with credible data on their environmental impact reduction.

To help clients track and communicate their sustainability achievements, each completed project receives a tailored certificate detailing its environmental impact, including carbon savings and quantities of furniture diverted from waste streams.
