David Greenfield appointed to CIWM presidential team

The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) has elected Prof. Dr David Greenfield FCIWM to the position of Junior Vice President (elect).

Greenfiled brings a wealth of experience and expertise to CIWM across both waste management and the circular economy. A renown industry leader, he currently holds a number of prominent positions, including:

  • Managing Director and Founder of SONECS, a research and innovation practice that focuses on Circular Economy Solutions, where he led or co-authored the Brighton & Hove and West Midlands Circular Economy Routemaps and the 2015 and 2021 CIWM Presidential reports.
  • Founding Partner of etsaW Ventures, a venture studio supporting circular economy start-ups innovate into game changing impact in the novel material and resource recovery field.
  • Co-Founder of Tech-Takeback, a not-for-profit using the ZeroNet on demand app to collect data erase and reuse or recycle over 100,000 end of life electricals in Brighton & Hove. Tech-Takeback won the 2021 Business Green Leaders award for Circular Economy and has been shortlisted for four National Recycling Awards.
  • Professor of Circular Economy at the University of Brighton, where he lectures across multiple facilities and works with academics to incorporate circular economy into the curriculum.

Greenfield will formally take over the role of Junior Vice President from Tim Walker, who will become Senior Vice President, at the CIWM Presidential Inauguration in June this year.

Speaking about his appointment, Greenfield said: “I am delighted to be appointed to the CIWM Presidential Team as Junior Vice President (elect) during the Institution’s 125th year. With a long history of supporting the sector and a thousands-strong community of experts, CIWM is uniquely placed to drive change, lead the transition to a circular economy and, ultimately, move the world beyond waste. I am excited to be a part of it and can’t wait to get started.”

CIWM CEO, Sarah Poulter, added: “On behalf of CIWM, I would like to congratulate David on his appointment to the important position of Junior Vice President (elect). The Presidential Team performs a vital role in the leadership and direction of CIWM, and David’s extensive experience will add real value at every stage in his journey to becoming CIWM President.”
