Senior appointment and contract win puts Averda in pole position

The end-to-end waste management, treatment and recycling company has announced the appointment of Rabih Jawad as Chief Operating Officer.

Rabih took up the role in December 2021, leading Averda’s global operations and several key support functions, including procurement.

Rabih originally joined Averda in 2002 as a graduate with a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Beirut. In the two decades since, he has successfully worked his way up the company, taking on a series of increasingly senior roles across Averda’s countries of operation. These include stints as Industrial Maintenance Manager, Project Director and Managing Director. Just prior to being appointed COO, Rabih was Vice President of Operations, where he led the wholesale digitisation of Averda’s worldwide operations.

Commenting on his new role, Jawad said: “I am delighted to have taken on this new and dynamic role at such an exciting time for Averda, as it positions itself to be the leading provider of sustainable waste management solutions in emerging markets. Having worked within the company throughout my entire career, I am proud to have reached the position I am in today and I very much look forward to continuing to play my part on the journey.”

Malek Sukkar, CEO, added: “I am thrilled to have Rabih coming into the role of COO, having worked at Averda for many years. It has been wonderful to see his development across the business over the years and I have no doubt his first-hand knowledge of Averda, its people and operations will be instrumental to our future success as we continue to grow and develop our service offerings.”

In a separate announcement, Averda has been selected as the environmental partner to manage waste generated by visitors to the Formula 1 race in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which is taking place between 25-27 March at the brand-new Jeddah Corniche Circuit.

The contract award follows a highly successful operation by Averda at last year’s inaugural race in the city, where the company collected nearly 28,000kg’s of mixed recyclable waste and around 55,000kg’s of general waste.

Averda will supply dedicated vehicles and staff, who will work around the clock, to ensure that all waste and litter items from organisers and visitors at this prestigious event will be quickly removed, and responsibly disposed of, ensuring that the locations are kept immaculately clean. This includes depositing a specialised compactor to handle food waste coming from the event’s main kitchen.

In addition, Averda has rebranded its waste collection vehicles used across Jeddah to celebrate the Formula One race taking place in the city.

Mohamed Elsherief, Averda’s Director of Business Development in Saudi Arabia commented: “We are delighted to have once again been selected as the environmental partner and trusted operator to deliver modern, discreet waste management solutions which ensure the location is clean and attractive for visitors to this highly anticipated and important race event.”

Informa, the organisers of Facilities Show, together with FMJ magazine, have teamed up to launch a questionnaire which aims to offer a useful snapshot of where the facilities management sector is now, and an outlook on the future.

For instance, are you asking workers to begin to return to the office with a hybrid home/office work schedule? Are you revising your premises to enable more flexible ways of working and as such have your workplace strategies, including sustainability, wellbeing and engagement had to be radically rethought?

Your anonymised answers will contribute to a report on the biggest challenges and opportunities facing facilities managers; now, and anticipated in the next 12 months.
