Sustainability in FM: SFMI publishes Summary Report 2022 and unveils award winners

The Sustainable Facilities Management Index (SFMI) 2022 Assessments have revealed that leading facilities management companies are ahead of the curve for Scope 3 Emissions.

SFMI reports that one third are now starting to use live supply chain data, as opposed to solely estimated data, in their calculations, which is a 290 per cent increase in the last two years.

The SFMI assessments found that organisations are starting to measure and understand the importance of their supply chain impacts. In the FM sector, Scope 3 emissions account for around 70 per cent of an organisation’s carbon emissions, and so mapping and reducing these emissions is critical to support FM’s journey to net zero.

There has been significant progress, with the revision of Science Based Targets to better define the terminology surrounding Net Zero, and an appreciation of the complexities surrounding reporting of upstream and downstream emissions, according to the SFMI, which says all too often, organisations are caught in a ‘say-do’ gap, with pressure to emulate peers for headline grabbing long term targets when the bulk of the changes needs to happen within this decade.

In the post pandemic world, organisations are taking different approaches to the management of workplaces, flexible working, and colleague engagement. Coupled with this is the global regulatory standardisation in reporting and disclosure of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) data.

Sunil Shah, Managing Director of Acclaro Advisory said: “Primarily set up to improve consistency and aid transparency, standardisation will also reduce incidences of greenwashing – but more is still required to remove some blatant attempts within the FM sector. A lack of engagement in the operation of buildings by the real estate sector, means the full scope of impacts are not captured, communicated or managed.”

Engaging with leadership provides a real demonstration of progress in disclosures and the SFMI Assessments for 2022 have found that Board level commitment to sustainability in FM is slowly growing – up 13 per cent over the last five years.

SFMI Awards 2022

The SFMI Awards 2022 which took place yesterday (29 November) online saw six FM services providers achieve a Platinum score. VINCI Facilities, Skanska, Bouygues Energies & Services, Mitie and Equans all achieved an 85+ rating in assessments for the second year running. They were joined this year by BAM FM moving up from a Gold Award in 2021 demonstrating its commitment to sustainability in the sector. A concerted effort by Sewell FM saw the company gain a Rising Star award from Bronze to Silver.

Run by sustainability consultancy Acclaro Advisory, the SFMI is the only sustainability benchmark for the UK FM sector. Now in its 10th year, the SFMI assesses the ESG performance of FM service providers annually across 23 criteria.
