ABM renews major University Hospital Waterford contract

ABM has been re-awarded a major contract to provide critical cleaning services at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).

Under the agreement with the Health Service Executive (HSE), ABM will continue to provide 265 cleaning staff across five UHW facilities, including critical environments such as operating theatres and intensive care units and includes the recently opened Haematology and Oncology Day Unit.

This critical cleaning service also supports UHW’s ability to run out of hours clinics, helping create the clean and compliant environments needed to improve patient flow and deliver reduction in waiting lists.

ABM started working with UHW in 2019, at a time when UHW wanted to implement significant change within its cleaning operation to improve overall standards. Following ABM’s appointment, HIQA noted significant improvements in UHW’s cleaning standards within the first three months.

ABM also established Ireland’s first on-site training facility for cleaning operatives at a hospital, where it continues to provide specialist training for new team members.

A spokesperson for University Hospital Waterford said: “We are pleased to continue our partnership with ABM whose team plays an important role in supporting the delivery of safe, high quality patient care across University Hospital Waterford and Kilcreene Orthopaedic Hospital. High standards of cleanliness and hygiene are essential to patient care and ABM has consistently demonstrated a professional approach, strong expertise and clear commitment to delivering this vital service.”

David Ferguson, Operations Director, All Ireland, ABM, commented: “We are proud to continue our long-standing partnership with University Hospital Waterford supporting the delivery of essential healthcare services in one of the region’s most important critical environments. Our on-site teams play a critical role in maintaining safe, clean, and compliant spaces across complex healthcare settings, from operating theatres to intensive care. This renewal reflects their professionalism, specialist expertise and commitment to patient-centred service every day.”
