CIBSE Young Engineers Awards open for entry

The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) has announced its Young Engineers Awards 2023 are open for entries. The awards recognise the best new talent entering the building services industry, together with those businesses that go the extra mile to support and nurture them.

More early career engineers than ever will be recognised at the CIBSE Young Engineers Awards (YEAs) 2023, helping to celebrate tomorrow’s industry frontrunners.

For the first time, the CIBSE Undergraduate Award will form part of the YEAs, which already encompass the CIBSE Apprentice of the Year, CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate of the Year, and the CIBSE Employer of the Year.

The CIBSE Undergraduate of the Year, which was previously presented at the President’s Awards dinner, has been brought within the YEAs to better showcase these rising industry stars on their very early paths to careers in building services engineering. The Undergraduate Award is open to any student in their final year of a BSc. MSc and Meng study and is designed to encourage students to develop their potential and aim for excellence. The winner receives a £500 payment and a trophy, with two runners up each receiving £100.

The Apprentice of the Year, which is split into two categories – Degree (level 5-7) and Technician (level 3-4), celebrates those who have gained their skills and knowledge through a combination of coursework and on the job experience. As part of their entry, apprentices are asked to submit a 5-minute video in response to a particular question relevant to their experience as a building services apprentice or the industry.

The CIBSE ASHRAE Graduate Award challenges finalists to show their presentation skills on a given topic in front of a panel of industry judges. Any engineer who has graduated in a building services-related field in the past two years is eligible to enter. The overall winner receives a fully paid trip to the ASHRAE Winter Conference, with two runner ups receiving cash prizes.

The essential role that employers play for those new to the industry is acknowledged with the Employer of the Year award. Without companies championing, supporting, training, and mentoring early career engineers, they would not develop the necessary skills to rise to the challenges we face. These awards highlight those companies who place the growth of their employees at the heart of their business. The Employer of the Year Award has three categories, for small, medium and large companies, with companies asked to demonstrate how they put clear, inclusive strategies for recruiting and empowering young people.

Entry is free and open to all. Closing date is 31 July 2023.

The CIBSE Young Engineers Awards will take place on 12 October at the Royal College of Physicians, London.
