English Heritage is Procuring Building Maintenance Contractors

The charity responsible for some of England’s most historically significant sites is looking for contractors specialising in Building/Civil Engineering and Mechanical & Electrical maintenance to support cyclical, response and project work across its estate.

England Heritage manages an internationally important collection of historical sites spanning six millennia, aiming to bring history to life through hands-on experiences to inspire visitors of all ages. Many of these sites are situated within extensive historic landscapes and form an important element in the charity’s visitor offering.

Looking after these historic sites is complex, balancing protection and conservation whilst welcoming over ten million visitors to its sites every year.

English Heritage relies on external providers of building maintenance to ensure the continued operation of its sites, with a wide range of work included (but not limited to) inspections, repair, decoration and cleaning of roofing, draining, fencing and glazing as well as testing, certification and repair of electrical, mechanical, plumbing and ventilation systems.

The Opportunity
With its existing contracts nearing the end of their term, English Heritage will be returning to the market in 2023 to tender this business and identify those contractors it will utilise during the next contract term, which is due to commence from April 2024. The charity anticipates that its Building & Civil Engineering contract may be worth £39M during its term with a further £21M potentially being spent on Mechanical and Electrical maintenance works.

English Heritage operates in accordance with the Public Procurement Regulations 2015 and as such advertises its major contracts via the government’s “Find A Tender” and/or “Contracts Finder” websites. All companies will need to respond to such advertisements as they arise should they wish to be considered. However, English Heritage is offering early opportunity for suppliers to express their interest early and to provide information that will help the charity shape the final tender opportunity.

The charity has issued a supplier engagement questionnaire with an accompanying briefing providing information about the upcoming procurement cycle. Interested contractors are invited to submit their responses by 5th May 2023 in order that their views can be considered as the charity finalises the scope, evaluation approach and contract terms for the new agreements.

If you are a company interested in providing such services to English Heritage, please consider completing a response to the supplier engagement survey which is available here. You do not need to have worked with English Heritage in the past, only share our passion and professionalism for the sites in our care.
