Mitie has extended its 13-year partnership with Birmingham Airport for an additional two years, and will continue to play a critical role in maintaining safe and efficient operations at one of the UK’s busiest airports, which welcomed a record-breaking 13.6 million passengers last year.
Covering a range of essential security and baggage screening services across the airport footprint, the contract extension will see an additional 60 security officers join Mitie’s existing team, ensuring that security remains a top priority in day-to-day operations at the airport. Mitie will also provide security for construction activities, as the transformation of Birmingham Airport’s terminal continues.
The extension also includes the deployment of four new security vehicles, strengthening visible deterrence, enabling rapid incident response and seamless coordination across the airport estate.
Commitment to the local community will also continue, with ongoing support for Birmingham Airport’s chosen charity, Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Mitie colleagues have already raised more than £38,000 for the charity through sponsored events including Mitie sponsoring and taking part in Birmingham Airport’s “Race the Plane” challenge, cycling over 4,800 miles in just over 10 hours to beat a plane flying to Cancun.
Gary Culloden, Managing Director, Security, Mitie, said: “Our continued partnership with Birmingham Airport recognises the outstanding commitment of our security officers, who help keep the airport running safely day in, day out. As we welcome new colleagues to the team, we look forward to strengthening our capability on the ground and equipping them with specialised training, so passengers can travel with confidence.”
Caroline Milnes, Head of Aviation Security said: “Mitie has been a partner of Birmingham Airport (BHX) for over 13 years. This long-standing relationship strengthens our existing security measures and enhances the mitigations we have in place, ensuring that our customers can travel safely and with confidence.”
