FMJ and Watco Webinar discusses meeting compliance in a new culture of accountability

The Webinar, Meeting Compliance in a New Culture of Accountability from FMJ in partnership with Watco focused on the implications for FMs of the introduction of the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) which in January of this year formally separated from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). For FMs the move heralds a stronger culture of accountability, transparency, and proactive risk management.

The session brought together European Sales Director Chris Budd from leading industrial repair and coatings specialist Watco, Kate Gardner a H&S Consultant from International Workplace, Laura Bagguley, Health, Safety, Risk and Compliance Manager, ISS, and Steven Downie, Segment Workplace Operations Manager, UK, Ireland & Germany at Just Eat Takeaway.com to talk about the implications of the recent changes to UK health & safety, building and fire safety law.

Kate Gardner H&S Consultant, Workplace International explained that the Building Safety Act and the establishment of the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) changes how we look at building regulation from a reactive compliance-based model to a mindset around accountability and day-to-day practice.

When it comes to the areas of concern, the most common health and safety risks for his customers explained Chris Budd are the traditional slips trips and falls across a wide range of environments – from manufacturing sites to supermarkets, especially in high traffic and operational areas.

This is why argued Laura Bagguley, thorough risk assessments can drive improvements and compliance. Utilising method statements and clear and concise methodologies that reflect the real work environment can help FM focus on their service delivery risks she advised.

Responding to Gardner’s explanation of the digital golden thread to improve safety, ensure compliance with building regulations, and maintain an accurate, accessible record of building information, Steven Downie noted that with many FMs often at multiple sites a system where you can upload documents helps to ensure compliance.
