Kingspan supports Birmingham regeneration pipeline

Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Insulated Pipe Support Inserts have been installed as part of the community heating scheme for a new apartment block, forming part of the multi-million pound regeneration of Birmingham’s Perry Barr area.

Work on the apartment block on plot 6 of the Perry Barr development will provide much needed extra care housing provision with 268 one- and two-bedroom apartments. M&E design and build contractors, Dodd Group, developed the building services package for the community heating. With the city committed to reaching Net Zero Carbon by 2030, ensuring efficient operation of the network was crucial. To support this, Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Insulated Pipe Supports were fitted across all low temperature hot water (LTHW) and domestic hot water services (DHWS) pipework within the building by specialist contractors Insulation & Cladding Services Limited.

Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation offers one of the most thermally efficient pipework insulation solutions, allowing the M&E team to minimise losses from secondary pipework with a slim insulation thickness. A dedicated product BIM object is also available from bimstore.co.uk and/or NBS Source. This supported accurate modelling as part of the BIM Level 2 approach used on the complex project.

Ali Lus, Director at Insulation & Cladding Services, discussed the installation: “The slim thickness of Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation makes it much easier to fit when you’re working in tight service spaces. By installing the Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts, we were also easily able to ensure there’s a continuous layer of insulation across the pipework. This should help to keep the services performing efficiently for years to come.”

Kingspan Kooltherm Insulated Pipe Support Inserts are designed to provide optimal load bearing capacity whilst also reducing heat transfer at these points.

The Kingspan Kooltherm pipe insulation products work in combination to maintain a continuous insulation and vapour control layer across the secondary pipework within the building. In addition to supporting efficient operation, this should also help to reduce unwanted heat transfer from pipework into the apartments, lowering the risk of overheating during the summer.

Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation is supported with EPD certification, providing a clear assessment of its environmental impact. The product has also been awarded Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold certificate, recognising it has best-in-class low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, supporting excellent air quality and helping to safeguard the health and wellbeing of building occupants.
