Mitie has secured a new partnership with Elgin to deliver grid connections for three solar PV farms, helping bring clean energy to local communities. The projects include connecting two solar farms, Maes Mawr in South Wales and Aston Flamville in Leicestershire, to local electricity networks, while connecting an additional solar farm on the Thorpe Estate in Staffordshire directly to the National Grid.
G2 Energy, Mitie’s independent connection provider (ICP), will be responsible for end-to-end grid connection at all three sites, from design and high-voltage cabling to the construction of substations and installation of transformers and switchgear. Working with Elgin and grid operators, Mitie colleagues are supporting safe and compliant delivery to renewable network standards.
Combined, the solar PV farms will generate around 90 million kWh of electricity each year, enough to power more than 33,000 homes. The projects will also save nearly 18,000 tonnes of CO2e, the equivalent of 120,000 return flights from London to Paris.
At Aston Flamville, Mitie colleagues will install a dual 33kV cable to the overhead network, enabling renewable energy to be generated without putting pressure on existing infrastructure. At Maes Mawr, a new 33kV grid connection will introduce modern protection and control systems, improving the distribution of clean energy locally.
Mitie will also deliver the high-voltage infrastructure connecting the Thorpe Estate 61.9MW solar farm directly to the National Grid. Installing a 132kV connection, the same voltage used nationally, into existing overhead transmission lines will allow clean energy to be routed to where it is needed most, supporting system stability and long-term energy resilience.
