IoH publishes EDI essential glossary for hospitality industry

The Institute of Hospitality (IoH), supported by the Savoy Educational Trust, has published a free, bite-sized diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) glossary of essential terms to assist the hospitality industry in understanding and embracing equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI).

As the IoH’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) lead Dorothea Jones MIH FIEDP explained: “Since I was recruited in January 2023, I have worked collaboratively with various organisations across the hospitality sector to champion change in the industry and elevate the understanding of EDI/DEIB. We want everyone in our industry to have a true sense of belonging. The dialogue around equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging is broad and growing. This introduces the need for common vocabulary to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Words often have different meanings for different people. This can depend on lived experiences and different identities.”

She continued: “It is vital to recognise the complexities and sensitivities of language and identity. With this in mind, we have compiled a glossary of equity, diversity and inclusion terminology to increase understanding. This glossary is not meant to be exhaustive. The main goal is to provide a basic framework around this conversation.”

Making the new glossary available to the industry and wider commercial world, IoH CEO Robert Richardson FIH MI commented: “This free EDI glossary of essential terms is a vital resource we are providing for the hospitality industry. Providing support to the industry on the critical topic of EDI is exciting. Thanks to the work of Dorothea and the support funding from the Savoy Educational Trust to establish an EDI lead for the IoH and wider industry, we will continue to shine the light on EDI and assist our hospitality family to become more knowledgeable and inclusive.”
